NBRC Astwood ’10’ 4th June 2025
Another Wednesday, another club ’10’. This time we were back on my favourite course, Astwood, and as usual I prepared the signing on and timing sheets for Dick to use. I’d also reverted to my deep rim front wheel as I didn’t think the wind would too much for me to handle the wheel.
When I arrived up at the meeting point in Astwood, I discovered to my annoyance that the paperwork had fallen out of my pocket en route. That was easily remedied using Dick’s blank signing on sheets, so no real problem.
Jim Eastment was once again out taking photos - near the start and then again near the finish.
Just starting, before settling down into an aero position
As it turned out, there was stiff head wind out to the Chicheley turn, but I really didn’t have much trouble other then a couple of steering twitches. However, once round the Chicheley turn, things got a bit easier, though I found my power sapped away slightly - I suspect because of a tailwind helping me along. I had no trouble with any traffic causing hold-ups and pretty soon (or so it seemed) I arrived at the bottom of the climb to the line.
I finished with 23:51, good enough for 2nd place and first on veteran standard. It was also my best time for Astwood this season, though only just!
This is the wind direction (actually derived from the local weather forecasts at the time rather than actual measurements) - quite an interesting spread of effective direction.
Then we repaired to The Old Swan for a quick beer before we all headed home.
Full results at the NBRC website. After 8 events so far, I seem to be leading both the main league table and the veterans table. This is mostly because I’ve ridden all 8 events, and the points are based on a rider’s best 7 placings.
